SMC Taiwan is a flagship project established and managed by the Risk Society and Policy Research Center (RSPRC) at the National Taiwan University in 2017. Its operations were subsidised by Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology until 2022, when it became fully self-funded through the establishment of the SMC Taiwan Association. SMC Taiwan is based in Taipei City.

The team have cross-disciplinary backgrounds and strive to provide scientifically grounded expert perspectives to improve the quality of media coverage of science. SMC Taiwan is committed to becoming an important knowledge network builder among the government, scientific institutions, scientists, media, and the public. It deepens the relationship between scientists and the media, assisting both sides in understanding each other's work and logic, helping impart important knowledge through the mass media and encouraging journalists to make good use of academic resources to complete their stories.
